I really enjoy experimenting and find unique ways of knitting something. I am currently working on several hats. From another project I am knitting at the moment, I came up with this hat. For knitting the piece I had several goals:
Continuously knitting, without cutting the yarn,
Not picking up extra stitches, only using those available from previous rows,
Create more color combination, then the sequence of the yarn allows,
Make the color of the yarn follows the pattern.
For the construction I use a method from architecture to build a geodesic dome. I used triangles of short row knitting on the side, with a pentagon on the top. The complete hat is knitted with two balls of Noro’s “Kureopatora” No. 1012.
I am still looking for an interesting neckpiece for a knitting kit. One of the pieces I knitted is a simple, but interesting looking cowl. It is knitted using short rows in a simple ribbing pattern. The yarn is Filatura Di Crosa ‘Charly Tweed’. Knitted with 5mm needles.
This shawl was inspired by a piece of unit origami I saw in a book. It is made from 12 triangles. For the yarn I used 7 balls of Naif Mela No. 573 with No. 6 (3.9mm) needles. On the end of each triangle I fixed a tassel. I used an I-Cord for the cast-off, which I extended over the triangle of the other side to add some stability. A neighbor kindly allowed me to use his Japanese garden to take the pictures.
For the past 2 days we had some terrible rain here in Yokohama. There was no chance I could go outside to take pictures. However, today is just gorgeous weather. Blue sky and pretty warm. As the cherry blossom is still nice in some places I found a tree in my neighborhood as a background.

For my knit cafe I was looking for some books about short rows. I found some in Germany and last week they arrived. One is about a short row sock, which looks really interesting. The other two are by Ruth Kindla and have various interesting projects using short rows – sweaters, ponchos, bags. I am surprised that there are not more books around on this technique.
I always enjoyed short row knitting. It is a really nice technique with a lot of interesting possibilities to knit unique pieces. The yarn for this shawl is Naska Premier ‘Jacquard Print’ socks yarn. For 9 triangles I needed 3 balls with 3mm needles. Some of the members at my knitting class are interested to knit the shawl too.
I am knitting on a pair of lace socks at the moment. To give it a more delicate look I used a boomerang heel using short rows. It is much easier to knit than I thought. I tried several ways for the short rows, but got the best results with a wrapped stitch.
